Can I buy a GVB 7-day pass at Schipol, and pay with Visa?

Hello,

I know there are multiple posts in the forum with variants on this question, but none answer my exact question and some are old enough that the info is possibly outdated... Can I buy a GVB 7-day pass at Schipol, and pay with my Canadian chip/PIN Visa card?

Per info here: http://en.gvb.nl/gvb-dag-meerdagenkaart

...it says Where to buy?: AKOs at Schiphol Airport, Holland Tourist Information at Schiphol.

However, in some forum responses and on other sites, a few people have commented that GVB multi-day passes for more than 3-days are not available at AKOs and tourist info at Schipol, and you need to go to a GBV service point (such as Centraal station).

Finally, if 7-day passes are available at Schipol, can I pay with my Canadian chip/PIN Visa card, or must I pay with cash? If they are not available at Schipol and I must go to a GVB service point, can I use my chip/PIN Visa card there?

thanks!!

Just so youre aware, you cant use the GVB pass to get into town (except the 69 bus to Sloterdijk). So I would just check at the AKO and other points at Schiphol. If they dont have the 7 day, then purchase one at the GVB office just outside Centraal station once you arrive in town. I believe you can use your card, but like any other purchasing, carry cash in case you cant.

Are you sure you really even need one, however? Amsterdam is compact and easy to get around.

Im replying to my own query with the answer to my question for future travelers.

Yes, you can buy all GVB multi-day passes (2-7 days) at Schipol and pay with Visa (chip and pin card). You can purchase them at the Iamsterdam Visitor Centre (signage says: Holland Tourist Information) in Schiphol Arrivals Plaza. This is located next to the Schipol Airport Information desk.

Also of note: even if you do not buy the Iamsterdam card (which doesnt suit everybodys needs), you should buy the Iamsterdam foldout map which they sell for €2.50. I found it to be the best such map (and far superior to any of the free ones).

Yes, you can buy a GVB multi-day pass at the airport with your credit card. I did this during my trip last September.

Is the 7 day pass valid from the date of purchase or from the first time it is used?

Thanks James for the update. This is very helpful.

Dear Jameskul from Toronto,

I am forever in your debt. I have spent literally hours searching the web, using maps and google translate to try to figure out where to buy the 7-day version of the OV-chipkaart. Your information is so simple and so clear and so very, very helpful.

You would think the iamsterdam.com website might mention this little fact prominently since they are mainly a site for tourists! The main GVB website, English version, does mention that the OV-chipkaart is sold at the Schiphol at AKOs and Holland Tourist Information. But they do not mention the 7-day card. Since the sale of these is restricted for some inscrutable reason both online and in some locations, they might mention the availability of the 7-day card, especially at Schiphol since it is mainly tourists who will be using them. Those arriving by train into Centraale Station will also have no problem but this site is marked on their map, whereas Schiphol is NOT! http://maps.gvb.nl/en/lagen Open the + sign labeled Add value, pick up, and service points and check the box labeled GVB tickets and info kiosk.

Once again, sincere thanks.

I went to Amsterdam for a day-trip last week.

In the tourist-information at Schipol I was now able to buy a 24 ticket for 15 € that included unlimited travel on trams/buses in the city+the train to/from the city centre/airport. Maybe this tis possible for 7 days also?

I will be there next Monday, so I will find out soon. When I was there 3 years ago the 7- Day GVB Pass was not available at the airport.
