In terms of content, this is a fantastic book. It is reasonably accessible for a beginner, but goes into enough detail to satisfy even a serious trader who wants to learn more about chart analysis. Based on content alone this would be an easy 5 stars.

Unfortunately, the book is entirely black and white, including the copious chart examples. Reading candlestick charts without color is irritating, and I often would put down the book to google examples instead of using the ones provided. Which is a shame, because that is not the authors fault, and the actual content is excellent.

I suspect the author even used color when he wrote it, because the images have an unnatural gray-scale appearance. It also seems like the digital version has color, though I only own the print version and cant confirm.

The images in the book are of very poor quality and hard to read. This book has almost the same layout as
Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets by John Murphy, so buy that one instead.

Of all the books I have read on stock and chart analysis, this one is by far the best!
Not only does it give solid investing and speculation advice, but the information on reading, deciphering and analyzing the various chart trends and stock behaviors is invaluable. Immediately after I finished reading this, I went back through the high points to make sure I have the candlestick patterns and major icons down to memory.
The great part about this book is that- not only is the information supported within the pages, but also I find the teachings in this book are bolstered when I go to analyze real stocks in everyday life. This book teaches you when it is a good time to look into buying, and more importantly- when to stay away from a stock. You will learn bearing and bullish patterns, along with trends that lend evidence as to where a stock might be headed.
Do yourself a favor- buy this book, study this book, and use it to invest wisely!

A great introductory book for reading charts. Before reading this book, my only references for proper charting techniques came from Google search results. McAllens thorough explanations from simple terminology to more complex concepts gave me the ability to sift through my prior knowledge and separate the good info from the useless. I am now more successful in my trades which can be greatly attributed to the diligence preached throughout these pages. 100% would recommend to beginner and intermediate traders alike.

I found this book very useful as an introduction to technical (chart) analysis for trading. I have read other investing books and often find that it just feels like the author is trying to sell you on their particular brand of strategy and/or use the book as a marketing tool for other investment products that they sell. Fred McAllen thankfully does not do that in this book. You really get a sense that the author is trying to cut through a lot of the BS noise that you get from these market pundits and sham educators and just provide a no-nonsense guide to basic chart analysis. Fred does plug is other books a couple of times, but their mention is minimal.

It is worth noting that the book primarily uses candlestick chart patterns for analysis. So if you prefer other types of charts for analysis then maybe look elsewhere. Personally, I am a big fan of candlestick charts so I like it. He does also go a bit into using technical indicators such as moving averages. Overall the book does not go deep into other technical indicators. So if you would like to learn about others I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Overall I felt that this book was an excellent basic-intermediate introduction to charting. My only disappointment is that it did not go into quite the level of depth that I was hoping for, but it is still a very good resource and I like the authors style.

Ive read about 10 books on trading the markets, and this one is high on my list. I thoroughly enjoyed the authors writing style and manner of sharing information. His examples are well annotated and precise, and he builds on simpler concepts before tying it all together in a comprehensive strategy.

What I found most valuable was the guidance on determining entry and exit points, and recommendations for setting stops. This can be a real struggle for new traders, or even seasoned traders who struggle with deciding when to exit a winning trade.

I read this on my Kindle, and I had no difficulty following the full color charts. I cant say this about many Kindle trading books with black and white or blurred charts.

I enjoyed this book so much that I bought his other title Trading the Trends before I was even half way done with this book.

This is a great value read, a definite add for anyone interested in solid, actionable, and easy to follow technical analysis.

The amount of valuable information in this book and Trading the Trends (Fred McAllens other book) is simply amazing. After reading these books I realized that up until now I havent been investing, but gambling. Both books have been thoroughly highlighted and dog-eared, and look like Ive had them for a decade (Ive had them for ~ a month). Implementing the strategies included in this and Trading the Trends have already made me exponentially more money than the books cost. Thank you, Fred McAllen!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars first rate guide to intermediate level charting. Required reading

This is a first rate guide to intermediate level charting. I Will need to read it a couple more times to take it all in but its very accessible and easy to understand with practical examples. I have read a large number of books on charting and investing and this is possibly the most accessible book on charting I have come across. I would strongly recommend reading this before going into more advanced charting books like Prings for example which is heavy going. I would classify this as Required Reading

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy Read - Interesting

positive:
This is a really easy read - things made simple.
I read half the book in a couple of days over a few hours.

Negative:
Shooting star, evening star, pretty poorly explained. They need to go back and complete this.
Its not saying what you do when you see it on the rise/fall.... and what it means. So why put it in the
book when you clearly dont understand it yourself. Very important concepts with charting and not explained clearly or enough

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, really great.

If youre trying to learn the basics of trading, this is your book. It can be hard to understand, and you will need time to understand things, but the book is amazing, you will learn a lot from it. I preferred to avoid the digital version, is not for me .
